A new music based social networking site, MOG, has been launched by former MTV marketing executive David Hyman with $1.4 million from private investors. MOG depends on you downloading their software which automatically tracks the music that you listen to on I-Tunes. Profiles are customizable and include other items such as concerts you plan on attending, favorite albums, etc.
As Pete Cashmore of Mashable points out, this isn’t a new idea. Other sites such as Musio and Last.fm have been doing this for awhile. In addition, Red Hat has launched Music Radar as part of their new SN site Mugshot. But I think all of these sites may be in for a surprise when we see yet to be released Virb.com (from the makers of Purevolume.com) come into action.
While I do not know for sure if Virb will include the a similar feature, I would definitely put my money on it. The reason I am so excited about Virb is because Virb has a huge leveraging platform among their artist community on Purevolume.com. Any of the above SN sites can pull music listened to from popular artists off of I-Tunes, but none of them have the cult following among the indie world like Purevolume. Combining these two things together will form a very strong music community. The only question is, will the minds at Purevolume launch Virb soon enough.
